Aromatherapy: what is it?
The word aromatherapy comes from the Greek “aroma,” meaning fragrance or scent, and “therapeia,” meaning care. Originally, it referred to the use of aromatic plant extracts, particularly essences, hydrosols and essential oils, for their medicinal properties. It was René Maurice Gattefossé who first demonstrated the properties of essential oils. Since then, they have been used to treat minor ailments, but their use has spread widely, including in cosmetics. To the delight of our senses and the happiness of our skin. Essential oils naturally find their way into skincare products. They have been carefully selected for their soothing, purifying and balancing properties. Aromatherapy and essential oils
Essential oils are plant extracts obtained through steam distillation. From the flower, root, bark, fruit or aromatic plant, a highly concentrated essential oil is obtained, rich in active molecules. For example, 4,000 kg of rose petals are needed to produce 1 kg of Damask rose essential oil, and 150 kg of flowering tops of true lavender are needed to extract 1 kg of true lavender essential oil. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, and steam distillation is a process known since Antiquity.
Essential oils and the skin
They are included in skincare routines both in salons and at home. Their active ingredients quickly pass through the skin barrier and are absorbed by the skin, acting gently and releasing their beneficial properties. The molecules contained in essential oils can work in synergy: combining essential oils allows them to work together and enhance one another. At Mary Cohr, for example, the trio of sage, lavandin and rosemary (called Vector T) is used in skincare products such as Universal Vital Essence and Body Vital Essence, as well as in salon treatments. Vector T boosts the effectiveness of makeup removal and optimizes the absorption of the products applied afterward. It is found in the modeling creams used during the CatioVital Double Youth or CatioVital Lifting ritual, as well as in the Aromatic Beauty Treatment.
